Fashion and Culture

This week we are talking about ways that people express themselves through clothing, accessories and body modification. Many people use their outward appearance to express their beliefs and even to show what they are passionate about!

The following pictures are representative of how four different groups of religious people dress. Look at the pictures and find the similarities and differences.

From the Muslim world, you can see the kaftan and kufi that men wear and long dress and niqab that many Muslim women wear. Not all Muslim women wear burqas, the long, darkly colored gown and head-covering that we often see in the media.

The Amish are Christians who live in agricultural communities in the US - mostly in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Their religion - and lifestyle - is one of simplicity. The Amish do not drive cars or use tractors in their work, their clothes are simple (some do not even use buttons!) and they only have necessary electricity in their homes.

Hindu is a religion practiced (predominantly) in India. The traditional clothing for a woman is called a sari, a long piece of cloth that is draped over the woman's body. The traditional clothing for men is called dhoti, and the shirt is called a kurta.

Hasidic Jewish people live throughout the world. There is a large population in Brooklyn, New York. The men and women of this sect of the Jewish faith follow the Biblical law for clothing - men wear payot, or side curls, with beards. The white tassles that are "hanging" from their shirt line are called tzitzit and were commanded by G-d in the old testament. Women must cover their collarbones and wear long skirts. They also must cover their head, which they can do in two ways: wearing a tichel, or headscarf, or by wearing a wig called a sheitel.

Assignment:
Based on the pictures you see here, think about the following questions:

1. What do these people-groups have in common with their clothing?
2. Are there any differences in the clothes between groups?
3. What theme or value seems to be common for all four groups in their clothing styles?

Make sure to answer the questions IN COMPLETE SENTENCES -- that means you will have at least ONE complete sentence for each question. Publish your answers in the comments section below.

  6. 1- I think that all they have in common that their chothes are simple, in general the womens wear a long dress and have to cover her hair while the men have a suit (except muslims and hindus). finally all their clothes looks traditionals.

2-All the clothes are from different style, the muslims wear the most simple clothes, but the hindus's clothes are more colorful and creative than the others. In fact, the Hasidim and amish wear similar, but the Hasidim looks more modern than the Amish who wear like in the ancient age.

3-The theme that I saw in common is the modesty, the clothes of the women cover the most part of the body. All of they wear the most simple as possible.

  11. 1. All these people-groups have a dress code in their religion. They show in their clothes what they follow and their culture.

    2. Of course they are. Every single group has their own belief about life so they show it in their clothes, and every culture has different rules about what they can wear.

    3. The value that seems to be common for all these four groups in their clothing styles is that they are conservative and traditional about it. They prefer to be simple and modest than the mainstream culture.

  12. 1. They have in common that they wear according to their religions and culture. Also their clothes cover almost the whole body and represent something of their beliefs.

    2. Yes. Each one wears different colors and the most part of them uses something to cover their heads (a hat or a scarf). It’s important to note that some of those religions wear something special, for example the Jewish people, they use something in their ears. Another one is Hindu people, women use like a point in the face.

    3. They have the same theme to dress: their clothes represent something according to their religions. But if you can see, the tradition plays an important role, that’s why they have like clothing rules, and of course all this is valuable for them.

  13. 1-The principal thing that they have in common is that they used long clothes for cover their parts of the body. Even thought they are different, they are similar in that way. And also they are strict with the clothes that they wear. For example with the Amish people they wear that kind of cloth because they say: "The cloth show the humility that the people have.

2- The difference is the style of the clothes, because if you see between Hindus, Muslims people and Amish, Jewish people is like compare the old age and modern age. And also the color of the cloth is another difference, each color has a meaning for their culture or religion.

3- The theme or value seems they all have in common is they get dress as the holly bible or lay say.

  14. 1- clothing covers the entire body, so they wear long robes. These clothes are plain and simple.

2- the difference in relation to clothing, would be that some of the groups presented cover their heads with hats or cloth. Also some men wear suits compared to others using more simple style clothing.

3- Every culture wants modest clothes to avoid the vanity between them.

  16. 1) Well, I can see that They all have in common wear modesty, we can see that because They all use simple types of clothes. Also, that women and men wear long clothes, covering their bodies or parts of it showing their religion and/or culture.

    2) One thing I noticed is that Muslim, Amish and Hasidic Jewish women and men need to cover their head or hair but Hindus don't. Another one is that Amish and Hasidic Jewish men use pants, but Muslim and Hindu men use long long dresses.

    3) I think that it's very important to them continue their traditions and continue showing the world and people that no matter how modern the world may be, their religion will continue as strong and intense as it always has been.
